Kamloops stands in the place where the North and South Thompson Rivers join together in the Thompson Valley. Its name came from ‘T’kumlups’ word that means ‘a place of meeting’. Water richness is not the only advantage of local areas. Kamloops is the point where three important transport lines - Highway 97, the Trans-Canada and the Yellowhead are converged to. The first settlement on the territory of today’s Kamloops was formed by the Secwepemc nation peoples whose main occupation was hunting and gathering. Later the settlement was important trading point specialized at fur trade. This was the first thing that attracted comers from the ‘old world’ that was harmful for native Shuswap Indians.

The Secwepemc gave their settlement the name of Cumcloups. Kamloops was the name of Indian settlement during the fur trade flourishing era. In 1867 this name was given to the whole village that got the status of town a little later, in 1893. In 1811 Alexander Ross and David Stuart visited the village of Cumcloups. In a few following years Stuart found a fur trading post here under the ownership of America’s Pacific Fur Company. A little later the company’s competitor, the Northwest Fur Company set up its own post here, the importance of the village grew. In 1821 the fur trade in Cumcloups came under the jurisdiction of the Hudson's Bay Company.

A huge flow of new settlers took place here during the Gold Rush fever of 1850’s and after the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway thirty years later. Before the construction of this railway the main transport for travelling around the coast were the horse-drawn trains. Nowadays Kamloops is the biggest city of the southern part of British Columbia after Kelowna. It is the 5th largest city of the whole BC. The main economy sectors are forestry, tourism, farming and mining industry. The local areas have incredibly versatile relief with hills, mountains, rivers and lakes, large meadows.
